So... All I hear these days is this SHIT music where they have stolen the drum beat from Black Flag, or the Mighty Mighty DK's and now they are punk.. But the lyrical content is this SHIT..
""Hello there the angel from my nightmare
The shadow in the background of the morgue
The unsuspecting victim of darkness in the valley
We can live like Jack and Sally if we want
Where you can always find me
And we'll have Halloween
on Christmas
And in the night we'll wish this never ends
We'll wish this never ends""
I'll leave who this is out, but they get called PUNK ROCK all the time.. FUCK THAT... FFUCCKK THAT... Punk is NOT a tempo or an damn drum beat... it's an ideal, and way of thinking.. it doesn't require a uniform, nor a fucking spike collar...
TELL ME what you think?

Punk, to me, is the idea that a thing/person/idea does not have to be pretty / popular / well-adjusted / possessed of "positive mental attitude" to have MERIT. Is it the anti-aesthetic -- i.e. the idea that the "norm" does NOT resonate w/ some (many? all?) people -- that it actually ALIENATES people. Thoreau famously wrote, "the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." If that's true then "punk" (real punk, not Hot Topic Punk) should resonate more strongly, w/ more people, than say...Miley Cyrus. There is this unexamined idea that all people should be shiny and happy, and then if you're NOT shiny and happy, you're flawed, and owe it to YOURSELF and everybody ELSE to buy your way back "in" w/ products you don't need, and services that only serve themselves.
That said, I'm in NO WAY anti-capitalist. It's just that what we practice (esp. in this country) is NOT capitalism -- it's some very perverted form of mercantilism, where the chief form of "protection" (for industry and institutions) is continuous indoctrination against REALLY looking under the covers -- at everything / anything. We are NOT taught to think critically about things -- we are taught to align ourselves w/ a handful pre-existing powers that be. And we *believe* that our interests line up w/ these "powers" because they TELL US this is so -- not because of ANY SHRED of evidence. And it makes sense, from the viewpoint of those that wield power (or aspire to): how can you fleece the flock if they won't stand still for it? So, since childhood, we're surrounded by a culture of "just do it" (i.e. just consume), not a culture of "stop and think". How can we be expected to defend ourselves from predatory, zero-sum capitalism (i.e. that which markets based on fear, greed, guilt, exclusivity) when we're not equipped when ANY critical apparatus to speak of? Which brings us back to punk: punk asks the unasked question -- WHO SAYS *this* is worthwhile, and *that* is not? What makes some OTHER person more qualified THAN ME to render an opinion about a thing's MERIT, with respect to ME, than ME?
I could not agree more with this. I think the biggest issues we face is the education system is touted as knowledge instead of a skill. So the bulk of the white collar minds that hit the system, make decisions based on what they have been told. Not what they see right in front of them.. For example. The Constitutions 1st amendment grants me the right to free speech... YOU Can't GRANT ME that.. GOD DID,and no one can take it away.. So hiding under the guise that you're protecting me or doing me a favor, is EXACTLY what Punk Rock is about.. NO.. I am NEVER GONNA MIND MY MOUTH.. and it MIGHT not always match your ideals... BUT I WILL FIGHT FOR FREEDOM... CHOICE, NOT YOUR CONSTITUTION.. THAT ISN'T my ideal...
Punk is a philosophy wrapped in a sense of urgency. VIVA PUNK!!
VIVA PUNK !!!
